Artist Steve Lieber talks about how writers can better deal with their artist collaborators, including debunking the old myth: “Comics have an unlimited budget.”

“Have you heard this aphorism: “Comics have an unlimited budget?” Remember it, because it’s wrong and you’ll want to humiliate and belittle anyone who brings it up. Your artist has to draw the stuff you are writing about, and his or her available time is your budget. Comics are drawn on deadline, and there are only so many hours in the days between when you send off your script and when the artist has to complete the story. If she spends all those hours drawing the 30 separate bicyclists you describe on page 1, she’s not going to have much time left for the alien armada on page 22.”

I did some watercolor sketches of Teddy and Vincent. I like Teddy’s polka dot tie, and I know Vincent isn’t wearing shoes but I honestly, for realsies want to see him in this. So I drew it.

“I was wearing an old Salvation Army shop boy’s suit. As I went to the bathroom I heard people saying, ‘Hey, faggot’. They slammed my head into a locker. I fell to the ground and they started to kick the shit out of me. I had to have stitches. The school kicked me out, not the bullies.

“Years later, I went to a coffee shop and I ran into one of the girls who’d kicked me, and she said, ‘Winona, Winona, can I have your autograph?’ And I said, ‘Do you remember me? Remember in seventh grade you beat up that kid?’ And she said, ‘Kind of’. And I said, ‘That was me. Go fuck yourself.’”

A joke that was made at the live recording for The JV Club podcast at The Bridgetown Comedy Fest. Karen Kilgariff said she wished her super power would be to have candy shoot out of her hands. Janet Varney then made a joke about how my friend and I were taking notes for our next graphic novel.

A side by side comparison of the inks and the finished colors of a Husbands inspired illustration I did for Brad Bell and Jane Espenson.

I met them at Bent-con 2012 and Brad mentioned that he wanted me to draw him as Puck and Brady as Oberon from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. So I had to do it.

I got to give it to them last night at a signing for the Husbands comic that Dark Horse put out. It was a great event that several of my studio mates participated in as well, having drawn several of the stories in the book.

Please to note Haley as a fairy holding a bunch of grapes. That adorable drunk.
